Very large Mason County topaz Lone Star Cut by Darmar Enterprises

Blue Mason County Topaz. Lone Star Cut. 24 mm. 68.40 ct. We were pleased and honored to be commissioned to cut a very large, clean, blue Mason County topaz in the Lone Star Cut for a special presentation piece. Clean faceting rough of this size is now very rare. However, we were able to locate an appropriate piece. (Click here for pictures of the rough crystal.) The finished stone is pictured below beside my reading glasses. It is about the size of a quarter. You can clearly see the light blue color and the clarity. A very large, beautiful stone.

Mason County Topaz (2)

Mason County Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. Official gemstone and official gemstone cut of the State of Texas. These stones are usually white to very, very light blue and, rarely, sky blue in color. The Lone Star is very impressive in this clean, crystalline material. A very unique and desirable stone.

Natural Color Lone Star Blue Topaz

Natural Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. 23 mm x 16.66 mm deep. The Lone Star Cut in this size makes a BIG impression. Large stones like this require precise meets of facet edges and corners, flat faces with no waves or dips and an excellent polish. Natural pinpoint inclusions near the culette do not interfere with the star or reduce the brilliance. This stone's pale blue color is the natural color. It has not been treated. Rough used to cut this stone was from Brazil. With untreated Brazilian rough you get a natural stone at a more affordable price. 54.60 carats.

Matched Pair Lone Star Dark Blue Topaz

Dark Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. In darker colors the Lone Star is less prominent or hidden. This light London blue/dark Swiss blue color that is still light enough to show the star. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas.

Sky Blue Lone Star Topaz

Sky Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas in light to medium blue topaz. The star shows prominently through the pentagon shaped table. This is a very impressive stone. The 3D star jumps out of the table in this lighter color.

Swiss Blue Lone Star Topaz

Medium dark Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas in medium bright blue topaz. This color has turquoise tones and is strong and bright. The star shows well with all its 3D effect.

Super Blue Lone Star Topaz

Super Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Round. Official gemstone cut of the State of Texas. This color is darker and bluer than the Swiss blue color. Although the star is less prominent in the darker stone, it is quite noticeable. That is a small trade-off for the rich, gorgeous color. This color has become rare and availability of cutting rough is unpredictable.
.

Citrine Lone Star Cut Round

Golden Citrine. Lone Star Cut. Round. 9 mm. Citrine is the second most popular stone species, after topaz, for the Lone Star Cut. This golden color shows the star well. 2.57 carats. lscit257.

Fine peridot cut in Texas Lone Star Cut

Peridot. Lone Star Cut. Round. 8 mm. This apple green peridot is a very good choice for a lively green stone with the Lone Star Cut. It is bright enough to show the star well, even with the strong color saturation. The peridot crystal causes some extra facet reflections and sparkles. Good, clean peridot rough in this size is not always available.

Amethyst Lone Star Cut

Amethyst. Lone Star Cut. Round. This is a medium shade of amethyst. Both medium and light amethyst show the star very well. When the stone is turned the star changes from dark to light giving the stone several looks in the amethyst tones.

Light green amethyst or prasiolite cut in Lone Star Cut

Prasiolite. Lone Star Cut. 9.8mm. Round. This pale green color is a refreshing alternative to the blue topaz. The star shows especially well in this green variety of quartz. A very bright stone. Prasiolite is sometimes called green amethyst. More pictures.

Rose quartz Lone Star Cut

Pink Quartz. Lone Star Cut. 8.4 mm. It's rare to see rose quartz this clean, clean enough to cut a faceted stone. This light pink stone shows the Lone Star Cut very well yet still has the velvety appearance inherently desirable in pink quartz. Camera angle is slightly off the table to show the lively facet reflections in the star. Larger picture.

Square/princess Lone Star Cut topaz

Mason County Topaz. Princess cut with the Lone Star. 6 mm. Princess cut top with the Lone Star Cut bottom - a unique stone for any special occasion. The sparkling clear Mason County topaz is crisp white. Some stones may occasionally show a slight blue undertone. More pictures.

Mason County Texas topaz princess cut 6mm

Mason County white topaz. Princess cut. 6mm. Sparkling white Mason County topaz princess cut is a sparkler. This is a standard princess, without the Lone Star Cut, and will fit most princess or square settings. This 6mm size will look good as a center stone in a ring or engagement ring, an accent for a large pendant, or a single pendant. More pictures.

Square Lone Star Cut

Sky Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut. Emerald Cut Square. 10.68 mm x 10.24 mm x 9.96 mm deep. Here is the Lone Star Cut in an equal-sided emerald cut or clipped-corner square. We developed this design keeping the official Lone Star Cut in the bottom of the stone, but cutting the top into the square with clipped corners. A very unusual stone, very eye-catching, truly unique. Diagonal measurement is about 12mm. The depth is the same ratio as for a 12mm diameter round, and should be considered when designing your setting since it is a lot deeper than calibrated square stones. 9.16 carats. tplssq.
Cut to order.

Square/emerald cut Texas topaz 10mm

Mason County Topaz. Lone Star in Emerald Cut. 10.7 x 9.8 x 7.9 mm. Mason County white topaz emerald cut with Lone Star. This cut modifies the standard square emerald cut in order to reduce the depth of the stone. The star is cut as a Lone Star. Angles of other facets are modified resulting in more side facet reflections that can appear over the star. The overall effect is a bright, sparkly stone with side facets sharing focus with the star, and a lower carat weight. More pictures.

Lone Star in Fancy Triangle

Sky Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut in Fancy Triangle. 12.80 mm x 10.20 mm x 9.19 mm deep. Here the Lone Star has been cut into a triangular shaped stone. The star is very visible through the large table and the extra space between the star and the edges add an interesting element not seen in the official round cut. This piece would make a great pendant.

Pentagon shape natural topaz with Lone Star Cut pavilion and table

Natural topaz. Pentagon with Lone Star Cut. This pentagon shape is a perfect match to the pentagon table, and is not often seen with the Lone Star Cut. The star is beautifully framed, has great Lone Star reflections, and lively sparkling edges. The material used for the stone pictured above is natural, untreated, light blue topaz. (origin of rough: Brazil.) Any other material can be used. More pictures.

Triangle Lone Star Topaz

Sky Blue Topaz. Lone Star Cut Triangle. Another unusual cut we've developed. The effect of the special faceting with the Lone Star focus is fantastic. The sparkle and liveliness is quite remarkable. The large flat table showcases every bit of that life. Anyone will like this stone. Approximtely 8 carats.

Lone Star Cut modified into a pear shape

Lone Star Cut Topaz. Pear Shape. 10 mm x 8 mm. The Lone Star Cut adapted to a pear shape. In order to place the star in this shape stone, the star must be cut at shallower angles than the official Lone Cut resulting in less reflective contrast within the star. The star is well-defined and looks very good. The drop/pear-shape in this size is perfect for pendant or ring.

Citrine EC Lone Star
See note below regarding perspective distortion.

Golden Lab Grown Citrine. Lone Star in Emerald Cut shape. This is a very large stone that was cut as a special order for a customer. The Lone Star was cut so it would be seen to fit inside the table as viewed from above. Thus, the rest of the stone becomes a rich, golden, multi-faceted frame for the star. An impressive stone. Cut to the size you request - special order only. You determine the size and material. Note: The image was taken from a slightly off-center position which caused a slight distortion; the top and bottom are actually parallel. This stone is 37.65 carats.

Lone Star Cut Spessartite Garnet

Spessartite Garnet. Lone Star Cut. Oval. Yes, we can cut a stone to fit some class rings. This one was custom cut to fit an existing setting. The star shows very well in this material of this color. The setting limited the depth of the stone. Modifying the cut to fit the setting caused the facet lines between and through the star's arms to be much less prominent.

Topaz crystals from Mason County

Mason County Topaz Crystal A. Crystal. 23.8mm x 17.9mm x 12.5mm. Faces on top side and at termination are rounded but plainly visible. Bottom side is rounded in shallow curve. Some surface and interior planar inclusions are yellow. Body of crystal has a slight blue-green color.

Blue and White Mason County Topaz Lone Star Cut stones

A Mason County blue topaz side-by-side with a Mason County white topaz. This blue stone is a very good blue for a natural, untreated stone. The picture highlights the few small inclusions, visible as the pinpoint bright spots, that is typical of natural blue topaz. Because natural, Texas blue topaz is so rare, inclusions of this type do not decrease the value of the stone except when they greatly interfer with your ability to see the star. The white topaz is brilliant and has no inclusions. Texas topaz is considered by many experts to be among the world's best and most strikingly beautiful.

Lone Star size comparison

Size Comparison

color comparison

Color Comparison
Comparison of Lone Star Cut topaz colors. Starting from the left: The first two are Mason County topaz - the leftmost stone is white with the barest blue tint that shows as a single reflection in this picture. The next stone is a light, pale blue color which will look white in some lights. Stones three through six: The rough originated in Brazil and was heat treated in the rough to achieve the different colors of blue. The middle stones (third and fourth) are the light to medium blue, most often call sky blue and Swiss blue. The last two stones (fifth and sixth) are the dark blue usually called London blue. London blue is a beautiful, rich color caused by the density of color in the stone. The contrast between the star and the body is less in this dark color.

Facts about the Lone Star Cut

The Name
Named for the state slogan "Texas - The Lone Star State", the Lone Star Cut displays the familiar five-pointed Texas star of the state seal and is the official State Gemstone Cut of Texas. (House Concurrent Resolution 97 of the Texas Legislature.)

The Cut
Lone Star Cut diagram This is a faceted round with pavilion angles arranged to form a Texas Lone Star when viewed through the pentagon-shaped table. This cut was developed specifically to show the Texas Lone Star in faceted topaz, the official gemstone of Texas. It was then adopted in 1977 as the official Gemstone Cut of Texas in House Concurrent Resolution 97 of the Texas Legislature. (HCR 97 precisely describes the cutting angles.)
This cut demands very precise cutting with particular attention paid to the meeting of angles, facet edges, and facet points. Our cutting is clean and precise and has an excellent polish so the star virtually leaps out of the stone. The stones pictured here were cut by us in our shop. A great look for this cut is to set the stone into a five-prong setting with a prong at each star point.

The Material
Mason County Topaz CrystalsThe most prized material for this cut is topaz from Texas. Texas topaz is rare, found mainly in alluvial deposits in Mason, Burnet, Llano, Gillespie, and El Paso counties. Most of the faceting quality material is from Mason County. The crystals are usually white, occasionally with a very pale peach tint, or pale sky blue color. Stones cut from this material are natural; they have never been treated or irradiated. They make impressive Texas Lone Star gemstones. Stones on this page that are cut from topaz found in Texas are described as "Mason County". To order please specify "Mason County" or "Texas mined" topaz.

The most commonly used material for this cut is blue topaz imported from Brazil and is commonly heat treated in the rough to eliminate unwanted brown tones and produce a permanent blue color. The Lone Star Cut is very impressive in the light and medium blue colors. Unless otherwise specified, the blue Lone Star Cuts pictured are cut from heat treated Brazilian material.
